IconColors Description

Easily change the colors of your icons IconColors is a program is intended for changing colors in SVG icon sets in relatively easy manner. The icon sets wont need any kind of preconditioning. The program searches through the files in the icon set for colors and presents them to the user for modifications. All colors can be changed to any of your liking. Effect of any modifications can easily be seen by applying the changes. Unwanted changes can easily be reverted. You can also save your modification configuration so you can do additional changes later. However note that this program can't change PNG or any other bitmap images. This program has been tested on Ubuntus 9.10 and 10.04. It should work as is and doesn't require any additional software installed. If you try to use this on other distributions, you should also check that you have Python and GTK+ (pygtk) installed. I think there is something that requires at least python 2.6. No additional modules should be required. These requirements are probably met by all latest distributions that use Gnome desktop.INSTALLATION 1. Create new directory named .iconcolors in to your home folder (the dot is required). 2. Extract the files from the archive to the ~/.iconcolors. (Additional steps) 3. Create shortcut in to the Applications menu. 1. Right click Applications menu and select Edit Menus. 2. Go to Graphics submenu and click New Item. 3. Set Name: IconColors 4. Browse to the .iconcolors folder and select iconcolors.py. 5. Select nice icon if you want and click OK.STARTING 1. You can use the launcher created above, or... 2. You can double click the iconcolors.py file in the .iconcolors folder and select "Run" or "Run in Terminal". In order for this to work, you might need to set the execute bit on for this file. It can be changed by right-clicking the file and selecting Properties->Permissions. Or... 3. You can start the program from the command line with: /home/YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE/.iconcolors/iconcolors.pyStarting the program in console is recommended if you encounter problems. Watch the console for outputs. Any output to the console means that something is going wrong. There is probably some kind of commenting system where you downloaded this program from. Try reporting there.HOW TO USE 1. Make a work copy of the icon set. (Do not use the original as you will need it later!) 1. Lets select Ubuntus Humanity icon set as example since it's one of the most complete sets of pure SVG icons. 2. Copy the icon set for example into your .icons folder ( ~/.icons ). If you use Ubuntu, you can find the Humanity icon set from /usr/share/icons. 3. Change the folders name ( Humanity -> Hummity) or something like that. 2. Selecting new icon set for modification. 1. Select File->New 2. Browse to the directory that contains the icon set ( ~/.icons/Hummity ) and select that directory. (Make sure you have the write permissions for this folder and files). 3. Wait for the program to load the icon set into the memory. 3. Finding colors to change. 1. Browse into the "places/64" directory (people usually want to change the color of the folders). 2. Click on the "folder-home.svg". Notice the colors listed on the right. There are six "orangish" colors. These are the colors we want to change (1). 4. Marking colors for changing. 1. Select Edit->Groups. 2. Click Add new group. You will get new group named "G1". 3. "Open" the group to find HUE, SATURATION and LIGHTNESS. These are the properties you can change (2). For now, change the HUE to 300. 4. Close the Edit groups dialog. 5. Click the "Group" column next to the color list. Set the group as "G1" for each of the six "orangish" colors (3). The hue of these colors are now "marked" to be changed to 300. 5. Applying the changes. 1. File->Apply. 2. Marvel your new pink icon set :) 6. Using exclude mark. 1. Browse into the "places/16" directory. 2. Notice that the "start-here.svg" has one of the "circles" pink (4). Locate the pink color in the color list and set the "Exc" mark on (5). After that set the group as "None". 3. Apply changes (File->Apply). The circle is now restored to original color. 7. Saving settings. 1. File->Save. 2. Give the file some name and save it somewhere (6). 3. You may close the program now. 8. Opening saved settings. 1. Trash the incomplete icon set and replace it with the original from the backup (7). 2. Start the program. 3. File->Open. 4. Select a save file. 5. The original icon set is loaded with all the made settings (groups, exclude marks) in place. 6. Select File->Apply and your changes are back again.(1) These six colors or some subset of them are also present in all of the other folder icons. This makes it easy to change all the icons at once. You can view more details about the colors by selecting View->C&HSL.(2) Ranges for the properties are: HUE: SATURATION: LIGHTNESS: Each value can also be -1, which means that this property will be left untouched when you apply changes. For more information, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV.(3) Click through the other folder icons. As you can see, the group has changed in these files too. In fact, the group has changed in all files in this icon set for these six colors. This is usually a good thing, but also has some drawbacks. We will tackle them in the phase 6.(4) The problem is that sometimes icon set makers use the exact same colors in unrelated icons. What makes this even more annoying is that all the other sizes of this icon have some other color defined for this circle, so it is hard to spot this error!(5) Exclude mark detaches this color from the automatic group changer. So after the mark has been set, any group changes made to this color in this file wont affect any other file or any group changes on other files wont affect this color in this file.(6) Notice that the file might be quite large (~100kB).(7) The save files only work with the original icon sets. So you must replace the modified icon set with the original before opening a save file. Requirements: · GNOME
