Mac WPS is able to work using the available hardware that is detected by Mac OS X.Unfortunately Macintosh doesn't come by default GPS equipped but the core location framework is able to calculate your position even without a GPS.First of all an estimation of your position comes from your IP (your internet address) you use to connect to the net. This is usually not very good and usually it allows to calculate your position in terms of the city/area you are calling from. Based only on that we would not be able to realize Mac WPS.The second estimation, a lot more precise, comes if you have wi-fi enabled (any modern mac is airport wi-fi equipped). Without the need to connect with any wi-fi your Mac detects the presence of wi-fi around it, and queries a central server with the ID (MAC address) of these wi-fi stations and obtains in return it's position with a very very good approximation, usually error is less then 100 m (300 feet). It works only in urban area, with a high wi-fi density but often it works in a wonderful way!Sometime it works even better then GPS, because if you are in a covered environment it still works, contrary to GPS that requires an open area above you to connect with satellites.
