Gravity Fun! Description

The Gravity Fun application was designed to help the user to place masses on a two-dimensional space, and give them various mass and initial velocity. Then you can observe as objects interact with each other gravitationally. Some might orbit each other or they might just swallow each other up! See if you can simulate a Sun-earth-moon system, or a binary star system or a black hole! This should be fun for physics or astronomy classes as they explore the inverse-square law of gravity. To add a body (like a 'planet') to the screen, click on 'Add body' and then click on the screen in the desired location. Then move your mouse until the velocity vector (the white line) has the desired length (which represents the speed) and direction in which the body will initially be traveling, and click again. You can then add more bodies by clicking 'Add body' again and repeating the steps above. All the bodies will have a default (standard) mass until you specify otherwise. You can change its mass by selecting an existing body on the screen, and then clicking on 'properties' in the control panel. This opens the properties box, and from here you can make any needed changes. The radii of all bodies is calculated based on their mass; (the more massive they are, the bigger they are displayed.) But you can force a radius of a massive object to be small (like a 'black hole') by manually changing it in the properties box. Requirements: ■ About 3 MB of hard drive space
