Totally Free DVD Ripper is a simple yet effective tool to re-encode your DVD movies into AVI, VCD, and SVCD files. This free tool cleverly combines a simple conversion interface with optional input and output advanced settings for the more experienced user. Thus, you can choose between launching the conversion process right away or taking a moment to fine-tune the output quality to better fit your preferences. The program’s main interface is structured into four numbered sections, which correspond to the only four easy steps required to start the re-encoding process – select the input DVD, the output format, the name and location of the output file, and the “Rip” button itself. Alternatively, the fourth step allows you to customize both the input and output settings for your videos before starting the ripping task. Here is where things get interesting. As opposed to its simple and wizard-like main interface, the two settings dialogs available are not for the faint of heart. Both include settings and features that only those who are very much into video codecs and video re-encoding will know how to use wisely. The input settings dialog combines familiar terms like “frame rate”, “angle”, and “volume” with more cryptic ones, such as DeCSS (to break the DVD protection), iDCT (to determine the level of quality of the MPEG-2 video) or Deinterlace. The same happens with the output settings – here you can easily change the audio and video codecs and bit rates, the aspect ratio, or the audio quality, but you will also be able to define the padding values, the VBV buffer size, the Mux rate, or the DCT and iDCT settings, if you happen to know what they are. If you do not feel too confident about this “tecky” jargon and the consequences of the various possibilities that each setting offers, I advise you to stick to the main interface and let the program set the best default values for your video – the results will speak for themselves.
