Learn More About the Operation of the OrthoGraph™ Survey and Architect! The system consists of two software elements: a PC component (ProjectManager) and a PDA component (Surveyor). (OrthoGraph™ Survey only) The first step of the survey is the drawing of a sketch of the area on the site, which is used as the basis for the survey. The software controls the automated surveying process on the basis of the sketch and the result of the process is an accurate electronic ground-plan. The speed and accuracy of the process can be increased by using a laser distance recorder. Leica's Disto A6 model not only handles the surveying data but can simultaneously manage the entire surveying process. The system handles the logical structure and relationships of areas in a tree-structure. The levels of the tree structure progress from larger units to smaller ones (e.g., plot, building, floor, and room). With the help of the OrthoGraph ProjectManager, we can predefine the types and properties of the levels of the hierarchy. During the survey, the OrthoGraph Survey works with the recorded structure. Various zone types may be created within each level of the structure, with the help of which neighboring logical structural elements can be visually well distinguished and assigned by various characteristics (e.g., tenants or organizational units can be separated; parts of an area can be separated on the basis of their wall finishing materials, etc.). The structural arrangement largely enhances the user's ability to view the data during both the survey and the subsequent data usage. On-site surveys begin with the identification of the structural arrangement. The hierarchic structure shows the relationship between the elements of the ground-plan as well as their location in the world. The surveying data pertaining to each hierarchic element are recorded one by one, enabling the user to record the most important properties of each element of the structure. These properties are information pertaining to the ground-plan whose recording considerably increases the usability of the survey results. These data can be textual (e.g., postal addresses), numerical (e.g., floor number, financial identification numbers), or describe distances (e.g., internal height). Not only fixed lists and marking squares can be used but even images and file attachments. Upon specifying the related data, graphic surveying is commenced. This process consists of two phases: first, a sketch is made and then second, the actual surveying takes place. In the user interface, the programme offers a wide range of tools for making the sketch: lines may be drawn manually, angles may be specified, perpendicular and parallel lines may be drawn to existing lines, arched wall sections can be drawn, etc. Closed areas may be modified by moving, deleting or adding corners, arching or straightening walls, and adding doors, windows, and items of furniture. In order to receive an accurate ground-plan of the area, we have to measure various distances. This is the most spectacular and most special part of the process because it is this function of the system that enables the creation of electronic architectural data, including information about the ground-plan, doors and windows, engineering elements and furnishings, simultaneously with the on-site survey of the ground-plan. The system supports the survey with an automatic surveying algorithm; it shows missing measurements and recommends the ensuing measurements.
